Help is closer than you think.
There’s no doubt about it, we are absolutely terrible at looking after our Psychological Health.
If we twist an ankle or break a rib, we’re off to see the doctor no question about it. But if a concern arises about our mental health, then we are more than likely NOT to ask for help hoping perhaps, that it, (whatever ‘it’ is), will go away. And I’m afraid it’s at times like these when words like ‘Stigma’ and ‘Pride’ jump to the fore. I have seen grown men reduced to tears because of their concerns about ‘what people might think’ about their… Mental Health.
Of course, I know as well as you do that those two words DO strike fear and embarrassment into the hearts of even the most capable. But the truth is, caught at the beginning, many of the conditions that are believe it or not, familiar to a huge proportion of the population, can be tackled and defeated. Take the two very common conditions that can, if left untreated, lead to other things. Take, Anxiety and Stress.
Both of these conditions need to be spoken of and not left to fester away unnoticed by everyone except the sufferer. Anxiety, Stress need to be talked about. Need to be shared .A word in the sympathetic ear of a friend or a loved one can go a very long way towards relief from sleepless nights and mind numbing worry. And don’t believe all you hear about the chemical solution either. Pills actually worked for me. They gave me time. A space. They built a bridge that enabled me to slowly, very slowly regain my health. But of course, what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another. In my view it is important to begin (if you can) a process of careful and sensible exploration. It’s not for me to tell you what works and what doesn’t. Just remember what friends are for and don’t dismiss any solution until you have had a really good look.
Also, and this is most important, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
